Synopsis

A little girl, spooked by a dark tale from her mother’s wartime past, starts to believe her adored cleaner is a thief.

Inspired by stories from the aftermath of the director's own family’s Holocaust survival, GANEF explores, through the tiniest of domestic details, the subtle and complicated impact of trauma on the next generation.

Director

Mark Rosenblatt “If they don’t know what you have, they can’t take it from you”

GANEF plunges us into the life of a spirited 6-year old girl in a big suburban house not long after the war. It imagines the damaging impact of her hiding those shopping bags on the mother, the cleaner and her child.

Inspired by the women in my family, it is also made by a predominantly female cast and creative team, including editor MAYA MAFFIOLI (BEAST – winner, debut feature BAFTA 2017), up and coming cinematographer ALANA MEJIA GONZALEZ (Berlinale 2019), actresses LYDIA WILSON (Branagh’s ALL IS TRUE, Richard Curtis’ ABOUT TIME and STAR TREK BEYOND) and SOPHIE McSHERA (Branagh’s CINDERELLA, DOWNTON ABBEY), and an exceptional performance from 6 year old IZABELLA DZIEWANSKA.
